What You Need to Know About Self-Publishing E-Books

Writing has always been a lucrative hobby. But this hobby can be turned into one of the most fruitful careers you can have simply by publishing what you create. Though self-publishing a novel or an e-book isn’t as easy as it sounds. If you’re ready to plunge into the world of self-publishing, here’s what you need to know about self-publishing e-books.

Degrees Are an Option

When you hear the term career, your mind might immediately shift to needing to go to college and complete a degree program. Although we definitely recommend getting your degree, you don’t exactly need one to publish your own e-book. You can simply type everything out on your preferred writing platform, create a cover and post it on a site, like Amazon. However, just because you don’t need a degree doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive for one.

Obtaining a degree in writing can not only boost your writing skills, it also helps to improve all other aspects. Learning how to receive constructive feedback, trying out new forms of writing, and even helping you come up with new ideas. The cost of tuition continues to rise each year so it can be tough to afford to go. You can apply for a scholarship so you won’t have to worry about trying to pay off your debt after graduation.

You Can Publish Pretty Quickly

When it comes to self-publishing an E-book, you can easily, and quickly for that matter, publish your books. You have complete control over how and when the book will be published. You also have total creative freedom when it comes to making a cover while not having to worry about publisher fees. However, self-publishing your book also comes with its fair share of responsibility. For starters, you might not have as much publicity as you would with a publisher. You’ll also have to pay for any professional editing and printing your own covers. With all the managing you have to do, you might see a decrease in your future writing availability. You really need to weigh the pros and cons before making your decision.

Make the Book Enticing

No matter what the e-book is about, whether it’s a fictional story or a comprehensive guide to better mental health, you need to make it enticing. This is where your market strategy comes in. Who’s your audience? How long will the book be? What’s it about? Will people find the book helpful? What can you cut from the final script that’s not valuable? Later on, you will need to apply this same thought process to how you will promote your E-book.

There are plenty of web tools and services for designers and developers you can look to help you build a web presence for your project and brand. These are all questions you must ask yourself before you finally publish. If you’re looking to hook a crowd beforehand, you can always look into purchasing a few ads, specifically Google or Facebook ads. Kickstarter and other crowdfunding events can also get you some publicity while potentially providing you with the funds you need for any necessary expenses.
