The threats and possibilities of a digital book market
In comparison to the film, music and even newspaper industries, the publishing industry is changing rather lethargically. This does not change the inevitable fact that it will face immense changes in the future which have already been apparent for many years.
It seems like publishers have been afraid of adapting to a changing market. By analyzing other content industries they saw the pitfalls of accelerated digitalization. They tried to avoid developments such as lower prices and piracy by delaying digitalization as long as possible. Maybe they deemed the risk

Oddly enough, today the idea of getting an ISBN for my floundering novel entered my mind. In the same way that all other ideas of its kind occur to me, a fleeting thought that never sticks around long enough to take hold. In this case, the trail it left as it raced through my mind made me think about the process of getting an ISBN for a book and what it entails.

I saw an article yesterday on the Guardian UK website in which Dalya Alberge discusses Ian Rankine’s suggestion that there be tax incentives given to new writers. Traditional publishing meant for authors an upfront advance on their book’s sales. An advance from your publisher 10 years ago could probably make a sufficient dent in your mortgage. These days, it might cover one month’s rent.
Amazon.com announced the Kindle Direct Publishers Select program on December 8th; at least, that was when I got the email. The email itself is typical KDP email, bland and featureless but the message it delivers sounds enticing. Let’s examine it in a little more detail. Initial impressions.
On the face of the offer, you get to promote your book on Amazon.com for free for an unlimited number of 5 day periods throughout the time your book is enrolled in the KDP Select program.
Your book gets a share in a fund allocated by Amazon.com for all Select participants.
